How to Shift

To log your progress:

Open the Shifting Project- Progress Tracking spreadsheet in the Library Services Student Assistants drive and record your name, the date, and starting/ending call numbers of the books you shifted under the correct call number section.

To shift:

Fill up a book truck at original location, move to new location, unload, and repeat.

At the new location:

  • The area will be flagged with green start labels and red stop labels. Begin shifting books to the shelf labeled "1 Start" and continue shifting until you fill the shelf labeled "1 End." Then continue with "2 Start" and etc.

  • The area will have a labeled piece of paper at the end of each shelf stating "Leave this much empty space at the end of each __ shelf. Fill up to or over the line." This tells you how much empty space to leave at the end of each shelf for that call number range. Please fill up to or over this marker when you shift. DO NOT fill under this marker by any amount because we will run out of room. Keep books tight together on the shelf when judging this. If present, do slide metal bookends in against the last book on each shelf.
Fill Up To Fill Over DO NOT Fill Under
  • Do not shift onto yellow shelves. These will be labeled.

At the original location:

  • The area will be flagged with labels stating "Stop at the beginning of __and see a supervisor." At the end of a call number range, the empty space for each shelf in the new location will change depending on what books are being moved.

Example: You finish moving the Ps from their original location to the new location and stop to see Phoebe so new labels can be posted indicating how much empty space to leave for each shelf of the Qs.

Shifting with Two:

When two student workers have overlapping AFD shifts, they can shift together. It is most effective to have two book trucks and have one person load at the original location and one person unload at the new location.

Note: You should speak with Phoebe when:

  • You are shifting for the first time
  • A call number section is finished/a new call number section is beginning
  • You reach a section that has not been flagged
  • You feel confused about what goes where or what needs to happen next
