How to Shelf-Read

At the beginning of the semester, check the Shelving Priorities List to see what section you have been assigned to shelf-read and its due date. Locate your shelf-reading list (a Google Sheet labeled with your name and assigned section) in our shared Google Drive using the Shelf-Reading iPad (located in the cupboards above the AFD computers).

Use the shelf-reading list to check and see if the books in your section are in the correct order. The physical shelf should match the list’s order exactly.

  • If a book is in the correct location, check off “Found”
  • If a book is in an incorrect location, put it in its correct location according to the list and check off “Found”
  • If a book is not present, check off “Not Found”
    • If you find this book later on in your section, behind a shelf, or at the end of a shelf, put it in its correct location according to the list and change the check from “Not Found” to “Found"
  • If a book is in the correct location and does not appear on the list, note its call number and barcode number on the blank lines provided at the beginning of your shelf-reading list
  • If a book is in an incorrect location and not from your section, note its call number and barcode number on the blank lines provided at the beginning of your shelf-reading list and put it in its correct location

In addition to shelf-reading your section, you should also complete the following tasks for your section at least once by the assigned due date:

  • Dusted Row
  • Pushed books in and up on shelves
  • Looked for books behind shelves
  • Looked for books on the end of shelves
