Library - Security Responsibilities

The purpose of this document is to outline the roles and responsibilities between the Noreen Reale Falcone Library and Le Moyne College security during points where these two departments intersect. This was created in consultation with Mark Petterelli, Director of Security.

Closing

  • Library’s responsibilities
    • 15 minutes before closing
      • Flick the lights on the first and second floor
      • Walk around the library informing patrons that we are closing in 15 minutes
    • 10 minutes before closing
      • Call security if they are not here already
    • 5 minutes before closing
      • If security has not done so already, begin locking the front doors
    • Library staff (students and supervisors) cannot leave until the doors are locked and security verifies that there are no patrons left in the building
      • Reason for this—patrons may need to check out/in materials and cannot do so if library staff is not present
    • The library should not be closed early unless there is weather or facilities related need
  • Security’s responsibilities
    • Security will arrive approximately 10 minutes before closing
    • Security will check with Library staff for an estimate on how many patrons remain in the library
    • Security will then check the entire building advising any patrons remaining that they have to leave as the library is now closed
    • Security will then check all exterior doors and make sure they are properly locked and secured
    • Once all patrons have left the building, a confirmatory search is then done by security

Lost and Found

  • Library’s responsibilities
    • All found property (notebook, hat, gloves, flash drive, etc.) will be placed in the green bin labeled "Lost and Found"
      • Do not put water bottles/coffee mugs and other drinking vessels in this bin. Security will not collect these for hygienic reasons. Please dispose of those in the trash.
    • Valuables should NOT be placed in the "Lost and Found." Please call security to report lost valuable items.
  • Security’s responsibilities
    • The security property office will stop by the library five times a week to collect items from this bin

After hours facility problems (4:30 pm to 8 am Monday – Friday and weekends)

  • Library’s responsibilities
    • Call security if there is a problem with the building outside of normal business hours (power outage, automatic door not working, ceiling leak, etc.)
      • Students should consult a supervisor or librarian first, provided one is available
  • Security’s responsibilities
    • Security is available to assist with emergency after hour facility issues.  Simply call (315) 445-4444 for assistance
    • Non emergencies, which do not require immediate attention, should have a detailed email sent to Robert Cook and Lisa Chaudhuri reporting the issue or notifying the on call supervisor during normal business hours

Other times security should be called

Library students should consult a supervisor or librarian first, provided one is available

  • There is a problem with a patron (damaging library property, not following library staff instructions, patron is being a threat to themselves or others, etc.)
  • Other emergency related situations
