Kim Waale : The Center of the Earth is in My Backyard

"The Center of the Earth is in My Backyard" is an installation by artist Kim Waale that represents and translates nature. The life-size, cast concrete replica of a campfire offers viewers a place to sit and consider their relationship with the natural world.

Kim Waale recently participated in Solo con Natura, a residency and exhibition on Isla Santay near Guayaquill, Equador; the second annual Biennale in Shumen, Bulgaria; and the 2005 Harlech Biennale, an international residency and exhibition in Wales.

In 2008, she will be an artist-in-residence at La Fundaticion Casa Museo A Solaina De Pilono in Galicia, Spain. Waale has received grants and residencies from organizations including: Sculpture Space, Light Work, the Saltonstall Foundation, the International Studio Program in New York and the Millay Colony. Her work has also been exhibited in museums and galleries such as: Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo, N.Y., the A.I.R. Gallery in New York City, the Everson Museum in Syracuse, N.Y., the Munson Williams Proctor Institute in Utica, N.Y., the Schwainfurth Art Center in Auburn, N.Y., and the Stone Quarry Art Park in Cazenovia, N.Y.

In 2003, she co-authored the book A Due Voci: The Photography of Rita Hammond (Syracuse University Press) with Dr. Ann Ryan and Dr. Julie Grossman. Waale is a professor and the director of studio art at Cazenovia College in Cazenovia, N.Y.
