Deborah Zlotsky : Being Impossible

Join us for an exhibition of drawings and paintings by Deborah Zlotsky, titled "Being Impossible," from March 1 to March 30. In this series, the artist manipulates powdered graphite on sheets of mylar, searching for signs of life in the smears and conjuring up blurred boundaries between documenting nature and inventing nature.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 2, from 4 – 6 p.m. in the Wilson Art Gallery, located in the Noreen Reale Falcone Library at Le Moyne College.
The exhibit is free and open to the public and may be viewed during regular library hours.
Deborah Zlotsky is represented by Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York and had a solo exhibition in October 2011. In 2010, she exhibited her work at Pierogi Gallery as the "Artist of the Week" and in 2006, her work was included in Twice Drawn, a contemporary drawing exhibit curated by Ian Berry, curator and associate director at the Tang Museum (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). This past summer, she received a residency fellowship at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Zlotsky’s drawings are in the curated flat files of Pierogi Gallery and The Boston Drawing Project at Joseph Carroll and Sons Gallery, as well as the online-curated registry at The Drawing Center. In recent years, Zlotsky has had one-person exhibitions at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, ARC Gallery (Chicago), the Carrie Haddad Gallery, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the Lake George Arts Project and the Arts Center of the Capital Region. Her work has also been included in group shows at Joseph Carroll and Sons, Boston, Mass., New York University, Hartwick College, Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, the William Benton Museum of Art, the Turchin Center for the Arts and the Albany International Airport. Her work is in public collections across the country, including Nordstrom, Progressive Insurance, Rutgers University, the William Benton Museum of Art and the Albany Institute of History and Art. In addition to the residency at Yaddo, Zlotsky has received residency fellowships at Millay Colony for the Arts, Ragdale Foundation, Ox-Bow and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts over the last 10 years. A partial list of visiting artist visits includes Syracuse University, Skidmore College, Notre Dame University, Union College, Hope College and Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute. Zlotsky received a bachelor’s degree in art history from Yale University and a master’s degree in painting and drawing from the University of Connecticut.
From the artist’s statement:
In the drawing series, LifeLike, I manipulate powdered graphite on sheets of mylar through a process of documenting what I imagine I see as the velvety material is spread, painted, blown, erased, wiped and smudged. While the results are fictitious, the concreteness of the illusion I conjure up blurs boundaries between documenting nature and inventing nature. The uncertainty between the two raises questions about what we identify as natural and as credible. This essential ambiguity is echoed in the title of the exhibition, Being impossible. Despite the accidental way I search for signs of life in the smears, the botanical/biological forms acquire the irregularities, complexities and beauty of the natural world Each drawing or painting is named through a similar process: a piecemeal soldering of fragments of sounds and grammatical parts to construct a whole.
