Using Library Resources in Canvas

Canvas is the LMS (Learning Management System) used by Le Moyne College. It is available to all instructors who teach at the College. Academic Technology can help you get started: Call the IT Service desk at 315-445-4579 and ask to be transferred.

LibGuides is the web platform that hosts the Library website. It is part of a suite of library-centric information products known as LibApps. We're mentioning them here simply so you will recognize the names when you see them referenced in Canvas.

This guide is to show you how easy it is to incorporate resources from the Falcone Library website directly into your course. The kinds of library resources that you might consider using are:

  • Subject Guides – Librarians create overview guides to help you find books, databases, journals, videos, etc. from the Library's physical and online collection.
  • Course Guides – You can ask your subject librarian to create a library guide just for your class. Tailor it to a specific research assignment or project or design it to guide student work throughout the semester.
  • Database Lists – Your can include the full database listing or just the databases most relevant to your course.
  • Search Boxes – This guide includes examples of custom search boxes for searching library content.

Librarians can also embed a guide into a course via the Le Moyne Library Navigation link on the left navigation bar. The librarian can embed a subject or course guide into all sections of a particular department (e.g. EDU) or a specific course (e.g. EDU-695). To add a guide to a group of courses or a specific course librarians can follow these directions.

  1. Go to the edit page for the libguide you want to embed in a course(s).
  2. Click on the gear icon in the top right navigation bar (same nav bar where the "publish" button is located.
  3. Click "Guide Metadata"
  4. Click the tab labelled "Custom Metadata".
  5. In the name field enter "lti" <-- lower case
  6. In the value field enter the prefix for the course exactly as it appears in Canvas.
    1. Enter only the prefix for the guide to appear in all course that start with that prefix
    2. Enter the prefix-{course number} if you want the guide to only appear in a specific course.
  7. Not sure how the course is listed in Canvas? Ask Instructional Design department.
