Importing References from Access Medicine

Access Medicine has no direct export to RefWorks so you have save your references as a formatted text file and then import that file into RefWorks.

In Access Medicine:

  1. Search or browse within Access Medicine to the book and chapter you want to cite.
  2. Click the “Get Citation” link in the gray navigation box at the top of the center column.
  3. Click “RefWorks” as the “download citation file”.
  4. Your results are saved in a tagged format. Using your browser's Save As function, navigate to the local drive and directory where you want to save the file and save the file in the *.txt format.

In RefWorks:

  1. Login to RefWorks.
  2. Select “Import” from “References” menu.
  3. In the “Import Filter / Data Source” menu, select “RefWorks Tagged Format”.
  4. In the “Database” menu, select “Tagged Format” (if it isn’t already selected).
  5. Click “Choose File” in the “Select Text File” option and locate the file you saved to your hard drive.
  6. Click the “Import” button to finish.
  7. Go to the “Last Imported” folder to see your saved results.

Importing References from Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library has no direct export to RefWorks so you have save your references as a formatted text file and then import that file into RefWorks.

In Cochrane Library:

  1. Conduct your search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Click "Export Selected" or "Export all".
  3. Choose either "Citation" or "Abstract and Citation" as the "Export type".
  4. Click "Export Citation".
  5. Click "Save".
  6. Select the location where you want to save the file, type the name you want and select Text as the Save As Type.

In RefWorks:

  1. Login to RefWorks.
  2. Select “Import” from “References” menu.
  3. In the “Import Filter / Data Source” menu, select “Cochrane Library”.
  4. In the “Database” menu, select “Wiley InterScience”.
  5. Click “Choose File” in the “Select Text File” option and locate the file you saved to your hard drive.
  6. Click the “Import” button to finish.
  7. Go to the “Last Imported” folder to see your saved results.

Importing References from EBSCOhost

EBSCOhost, which includes databases such as CINAHL or PsycINFO, have a Direct Export to RefWorks functionality, which greatly simplifies importing references.

In EBSCOhost:

  1. Search a topic in a database such as PsycINFO.
  2. Mark one or more items from results by clicking the “Add to Folder” icon to the right of each results item.
  3. Click on the “Folder” link in the upper right corner.
  4. Select items you want to export to RefWorks. (If you don’t select at least one item, all results will be exported.)
  5. Click “Export” button.
  6. Click the radio button in front of “Direct Export to RefWorks” option.
  7. Tip: Turn off your browser’s pop-up blocker to ensure that the next step works properly.
  8. Click the “Save” button to begin the direct export.
  9. If you are asked which version of RefWorks to export to, choose "Export to legacy RefWorks".

In RefWorks:

  1. If you are not already logged into RefWorks, you will be prompted to do so.
  2. Go to the “Last Imported” folder to see your saved results.

Importing References from Google Scholar

Google Scholar has a direct export to RefWorks option in the "Cite" link below each citation. However, you have to export them one at a time. There is no way to mark multiple references for export.

In Google Scholar:

  1. Conduct your search in Google Scholar.
  2. Each record displayed will have either a "Cite" link or an "Import into RefWorks" link. You can set up the latter in the Google Scholar settings for your Google account.
  3. The "Cite" link requires an additional step to click on the "RefWorks" option. 
  4. If you are asked which version of RefWorks to export to, choose "Export to legacy RefWorks".

In RefWorks: 

  1. If you are not already logged into RefWorks, you will be prompted to do so.
  2. Go to the “Last Imported” folder to see your saved results.

Importing References from Le Moyne Library Catalog

The Le Moyne Library Catalog has no direct export to RefWorks so you have save your references as a formatted text file and then import that file into RefWorks.

In the Le Moyne Library Catalog:

  1. Mark one or more items from results by using the “Book Cart” button.
  2. Click the “View Cart” button to see saved search results.
  3. Select "Full Display" or "Endnote/RefWorks" from “Format of List” column.
  4. Select "Local Disk" from “Send List To” column.
  5. Click Submit to save the “export.txt” file. Your results are saved in a tagged format. Using your browser's Save As function, navigate to the local drive and directory where you want to save the file and save the file in the *.txt format.

In RefWorks:

  1. Login to RefWorks.
  2. Select “Import” from “References” menu.
  3. In the “Import Filter / Data Source” menu, select “Le Moyne College Reale Falcone Library”.
  4. In the “Database” menu, select either “Le Moyne Catalog [Full Display Export]” or “Le Moyne Catalog [Endnote/Refworks export]” (depends on what you selected in step 3 above).
  5. Click “Choose File” in the “Select Text File” option and locate the file you saved to your hard drive. 
  6. Click the “Import” button to finish.
  7. Go to the “Last Imported” folder to see your saved results.

Importing References from OT Search

OT Search has no direct export to RefWorks so you have save your references as a formatted text file and then import that file into RefWorks.

In OT Search:

  1. Do a search in OT Search on your topic.
  2. Mark the references from the Search Results that you want to save to RefWorks by clicking the appropriate checkboxes to the left of each reference.
  3. Click the "Email/Save" link at the top of the page above the Search Results to see your saved references.
  4. In the "Options" section, change "view of records" to "Full" and "type of output" to "Formatted".
  5. Click either the "View" or "Save" buttons.
  6. This should open a separate window that you can save as a text file to your desktop.

In RefWorks:

  1. Login to RefWorks.
  2. Select “Import” from “References” menu.
  3. In the “Import Filter / Data Source” menu, select “SIRSI Library Software”.
  4. In the “Database” menu, select "AOTA - OT". 
  5. Click “Choose File” in the “Select Text File” option and locate the file you saved to your hard drive.
  6. Click the “Import” button to finish.
  7. Go to the “Last Imported” folder to see your saved results.

Importing References from OT Seeker

OT Seeker has no direct export to RefWorks so you have save your references as a formatted text file and then import that file into RefWorks.

In OT Seeker:

  1. Perform a search on OTseeker.
  2. Select the articles that you wish to export to a reference management system (The maximum you can export each time is 20).
  3. Select ‘View Selected In Full Detail’ at the bottom of the page.
  4. At the bottom of this Detailed Search Results page Click on ‘Export Reference’.
  5. This will open a window asking you to either save or open a file. The information in this notepad file is in a tagged text format. Save this file to your computer.

In RefWorks:

  1. Login to RefWorks.
  2. Select “Import” from “References” menu.
  3. In the “Import Filter / Data Source” menu, select “RIS Format”.
  4. In the “Database” menu, select “RIS Format” (if it isn’t already selected).
  5. Click “Choose File” in the “Select Text File” option and locate the file you saved to your hard drive.
  6. Click the “Import” button to finish.
  7. Go to the “Last Imported” folder to see your saved results.

Importing References from ProQuest

ProQuest databases have a direct export option for importing references into RefWorks.

In ProQuest:

  1. Perform a search and mark the references you want to export.
  2. Click the "Save" link at the top of the search results list.
  3. Under "Export/Save", choose "RefWorks". 
  4. A confirmation window will open. It is best not to change the default settings. Click "Continue". 
  5. If you are asked which version of RefWorks to export to, choose "Export to legacy RefWorks".

In RefWorks:

  1. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references.
  2. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Importing References from PubMed

The NLM database, PubMed, does not have a way to directly export citation references into RefWorks. Instead, you must first save the references as a delimited text file -- citations.nbib -- and then import that file into RefWorks using the NLM PubMed import filter.

In PubMed:

  1. Search a topic in PubMed.
  2. Mark one or more items from results by using the checkbox to the left of each search item.
  3. Click the “Send to” menu above the search results and select “Citation manager” from the list of options.
  4. Click the “Create File” button in the confirmation view. Your results will be saved in a tagged format. Using your browser's Save As function, navigate to the local drive and directory where you want to save the file and save the file in the *.nbib format.

In RefWorks:

  1. Login to RefWorks.
  2. Select “Import” from “References” menu.
  3. In the “Import Filter / Data Source” menu, select “NLM PubMed”.
  4. In the “Database” menu, select “PubMed” (if it isn’t already selected).
  5. Click “Choose File” in the “Select Text File” option and locate the file you saved to your hard drive.
  6. Click the “Import” button to finish.
  7. Go to the “Last Imported” folder to see your saved results.

Importing References from Rehabilitation Reference Center

Rehabilitation Reference Center (EBSCO) has a Direct Export to RefWorks functionality, which greatly simplifies importing references.

In Rehabilitation Reference Center:

  1. Search a topic in Rehabilitation Reference Center.

Importing References from ScienceDirect

ScienceDirect has a direct export option for importing references into RefWorks.

In ScienceDirect:

  1. Mark the records you want to import and click the "Export" button at the top of the list of references.
  2. Under "Content", select "Citations and Abstracts".
  3. Under "Direct Export", select "Save to RefWorks". 
  4. If you are asked which version of RefWorks to export to, choose "Export to legacy RefWorks".

In RefWorks:

  1. If you are not already logged into RefWorks, you will be prompted to do so.
  2. Go to the “Last Imported” folder to see your saved results.
