Heights Alert

In the Event of an emergency be prepared and be connected to Le Moyne's Emergency Notification System!

Snow Days

If you receive a Heights Alert or other notification that campus has closed due to weather (for example, a snowstorm), the library will also be closed and you do not have to report to work if you have a shift that day.  

Bomb Threat

If you are the receiver of a call indicating there is an bomb in the building:

  • REMAIN CALM AND DO NOT HANG UP
  • Keep the caller on the line, as long as possible
  • Record the time of the call
  • Document everything the caller says and ask them questions: location of the device? time of detonation? reason for planting the device?
  • Document background noises: motors running, music, traffic, television, etc.
  • Listen closely to the caller's voice: male/female, calm/excited, accent, muffled, intoxicated
  • Call Security at 445-4444 as soon as the caller hangs up
  • Inform supervisor

Fire/Explosion

  • Activate the fire alarm system by pulling the alarm (located by front exit door closest to study room 145 on first floor of the Library).
  • Call 445-4444 or 911 as soon as it is safe to do so
  • Inform supervisor
  • Evacuate the building immediately in a safe and orderly manner.
    • In cases of fire, evacuate entire building and encourage use of EMERGENCY EXITS.
    • During a fire, assist persons with disabilities to the nearest stairwell and help them exit the building. If the person’s disability (such as being in a wheel chair) prevents you from helping them exit the building, then you should assist them to the nearest sanctuary point. In the Library, sanctuary points are the stairwell landings in the emergency exits because of their fire protection factor. Call Campus Security at 4444, to inform them of the person’s exact location.Do NOT leave a person in an area that has SMOKE in it.
      • LOCK DOWN ELEVATOR–PUSH RED BUTTON IN. Elevators are not to be used, even for handicapped persons when there is fire or smoke involvement. Security will assist them when they arrive. Note their location and report it to Security personnel.
        • Desk B personnel evacuates second floor, directing people to NEAREST EMERGENCY EXIT, checking all rooms (including study rooms, faculty reading room, archives and both restrooms).
        • Desk A personnel directs people out front doors and carefully checks the first floor including both bathrooms and the Student Success Center, the QRC and Disability Services.
        • If HANDICAPPED/ELDERLY are in the building on second floor, notify Security for assistance. DO NOT USE ELEVATOR when smoke and fire are involved.

Power Outage

Do not wait for Security Office to tell you what to do. Remain calm.

  • If there is no supervisor, call Security at x4444 and report the reason, if known.
  • Emergency lights will remain on for less than one hour. You can use the flashlight app on your cell phone if extra light is needed.
  • LOCK DOWN ELEVATOR–PUSH RED BUTTON IN. Elevators are not to be used, even for handicapped persons. Security will assist them when they arrive. Note their location and report it to Security personnel.
  • Desk B personnel evacuates second floor, directing people to NEAREST EMERGENCY EXIT, checking all rooms (including study rooms, faculty reading room, archives and both restrooms).
  • Desk A personnel directs people out front doors and carefully checks the first floor including both bathrooms and the Student Success Center, the QRC and Disability Services.
  • If HANDICAPPED/ELDERLY are in the building, on second floor, notify Security for assistance. DO NOT USE ELEVATOR when power outages occur or smoke and fire are involved.

Suicidal Threat/Attempt

  • Inform supervisor
  • Ask the person directly if they are considering suicide
  • Take them seriously and really listen
  • Assure them that you care and that they are not alone
  • Make the person feel that there is hope of things getting better
  • Remove any objects that could be classified as dangerous, and could be used to cause harm
  • If currently suicidal, call Security at 445-4444
  • Make a Wellness Center referral at 445-4195

Weather Emergency

In the event of a weather emergency:

  • Depending on the severity of the storm, all occupants should be brought into the interior corridors.
    • In cases of tornado/hurricane-force winds, do not evacuate.
    • Use sanctuary points or designated safe locations. They are used in cases of high storms & winds where it would be dangerous to leave the building. In the Library, sanctuary points are the stairwell landings in the emergency exits because of their fire protection factor.
  • Stay away from outside walls and windows
  • Do not take time to collect personal belongings such as books or backpack

KEY WEATHER TERMS

WATCH–Threatening weather is likely. Remain alert and be prepared to implement a plan of action

WARNING–Severe weather is occurring or has been indicated by radar. Take immediate action.

Active Shooter

If alerted there is an active shooter on campus (Heights Alert):

  1. Evacuate Have an escape route and plan in mind (try to evacuate as many people as you safely can but protect your own life). Students are likely to follow the lead of staff during an active shooter situation.
  • Desk A evacuate the first floor (if you can safely do so) and lead them to the back emergency doors (through the Student Success Center which leads toward the PAC).
  • Desk B run upstairs and evacuate the second floor (if you can safely do so) and lead them to the back emergency doors (which lead toward the PAC). Remember never to put yourself in danger!
    1. Leave your belongings behind (purse, books, backpack, etc)
    2. Keep your hands visible (they should be empty)
  1. Hide Out
    1. Hide in an area out of the active shooter's view -Block entry to your hiding place and lock doors if possible
    2. Utilize door stops, chairs, cabinets, etc.
    3. Silence your cell phones
    4. Turn off lights
  2. Take Action
    1. Take action as a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger
    2. Attempt to incapacitate the active shooter
    3. Act with physical aggression and throw items at the active shooter

FIND SHELTER

  • If inside:
    • Use a desk or piece of furniture as a shield
    • Move away from windows or doors
    • Stay low and make body as small as possible
    • Remain quiet and still, but prepare to move quickly
  • If outside:
    • Try to get behind solid objects (trees, bleachers)
    • Lie flat with face away from the event
    • Cover your head and face
    • Remain quiet and still, but be prepared to move quickly
