HST 404 / ENG 405: Medieval and Renaissance Women

Gender and Literature

Subject Headings Tips

Subject headings are a great way to use the library's catalog to locate relevant materials. They are created by the Library of Congress, and you are not expected to know these terms by heart, but they are the best way to focus your research.   I suggest doing a Keyword search as a starting point.  For example, a keyword search on women medieval writing will give you a long list of books that mention women and medieval and writing in the record. Look at your results and find a book that is close to your topic.  Look at the catalog record and you will see the subject headings linked at the bottom. By clicking on those links, you will be directed to the books that fit that subject.  Give it a try!

Books in the catalog

The links below will take you to a list of books available our library (or through ConnectNY if our library doesn't have any) on each women composer.  Be sure to look at the related subject headings (see box to your left for more info) to see if there are other books that you may want.

NOTE: to locate texts in the library written by these women you should search for them as an author. The best way to get an accurate result is to click on the proper subject heading for your author, and then change the dropdown box to Author and hit search.
